Image of the Child

The “Image of the Child” is a foundational concept in the Reggio Emilia approach to education. It refers to the deeply held beliefs we carry—consciously or unconsciously—about who children are, what they are capable of, and how they learn.

This image shapes:

  • How we speak to children
  • The environments we create
  • The curriculum we offer
  • The expectations we hold
  • The relationships we build

At Allegro Child Care Centre, we view every child as capable, competent, curious, and full of potential. We believe children are active participants in their own learning—rich in ideas, theories, and perspectives. They are researchers, collaborators, and communicators who construct knowledge through relationships with others, with materials, and within meaningful contexts.

We honour each child’s identity, culture, and voice. We uphold their rights to be heard, to express themselves in many ways, and to influence their learning environment. Our role as educators is to listen deeply, observe closely, and create spaces that nurture wonder, critical thinking, and connection.
